It Started With Christmas
Jenny Hale
I can't say enough about this author. I read 6 of her books during the Christmas season. I wanted to creep right on into the New Year with a Christmas book because they were just that cute. Are they Hallmark-like? Yes! Are they cheesy? Sure. Would any of this ever happen in real life? Nope. But I love an easy-going book that requires me to think little to none. With it focusing on Christmas and a clean romance, it's even better.
It Was An Ugly Couch Anyway
Elizabeth Passarella
I'll be the first to admit that I did not love her book, "The Good Apple." I still have it in my library, so I'm tempted to loop back through on that one because I loved THIS one so much. Elizabeth lives in New York City. This book chronicles her quest to get a new apartment in her building/co-op. She weaves a little bit of faith in here but don't bank on it for that. Yet, there is some good stuff and moments of encouragement for a mom .. a mom who sometimes just feels overwhelmed and is learning and is making peace with expectations or the lack thereof. I love the city, too! So, I was all over that aspect of the book.
Betty Ford
Lisa McCubbin
Oh my heart loved this one so much. I have always enjoyed studying the 60's and 70's, and this book shed light on political events happening during that time. However, there was much to be said about Betty Ford's struggle to live up to the pressures of being a politician's wife and balancing the life of a stay at home mom. This book held nothing back in regards to Betty's struggle with addiction. I'll even say I teared up a couple of times.
The Speechwriter
Barton Swaim
This was another Round 2 book for me. And, I still could not put it down. Looking at the cover, one might want to snooze. And if you don't enjoy politics/background of that then you might want to pass on this one. But to keep it brief, Barton Swaim was SC governor Mark Sanford's speechwriter. Swaim tells all about the difficulties of meeting the expectations of a political superior. He ends with Sanford's going AWOL. At the very end of the book, which makes it all worth it and thought-provoking, Swaim shares his views on the nature of all politicians. If you have an inkling of interest for this book, I say read it!
I read The Frozen River recently and it definitely lives up to the hype. It is a true story, so you might like it!
