Social media has done something ugly. We all know it. We even talk about it. But we fail to really do anything about it.
What was once just a look across the classroom and being envious of someone's outfit has now been brought to a platform that is forever in front of our faces. We know what our friends are doing at any given moment -- but within reason, as long as they post something about it.
We see the size of others and their abs or how they look in a bathing suit. We can see their stylish and updated new kitchens or the meal they labored for their family. We may know them, or we might not. We can easily find our favorite reality star's Insta-story or some random chick who lives in California that we just like.
It's not just limited to social media. Yet social media spurs on the comparison and competition between ourselves and the rest of the world --- myself included.
Yesterday, I was reading again in Colossians and the many godly qualities Paul encourages the believer to "put on." Here it was -- humility. And while, I've probably said more in this intro than I will say here, it finally hit me. Our comparison game is STRONG. Yet, in the end who are we really comparing ourselves to? We are comparing ourselves to a bunch of sinners. There's not one person on this earth who is better than another and yet I want so and so's life. Hello, she's a sinner too!
Our comparison shouldn't be to another sinner. Nope. Our comparison should be to our Holy God. We will not be like Him but our sanctification makes us more in His image. God's spirit works in us to become more like Him and not the friend who posted the most luxurious birthday party on IG for her seven year old. Does that make sense?
I hope so! It has been such a renewal for my mind over these last twenty-four hours. I wanted to share here and encourage you also.
